History of Carmel Kitchen Specialists, Inc.

In 1975, Jeff Reed had a choice following graduation from Indiana University: Get into the real estate business in Michigan or move to Carmel, Indiana and buy an 18- month-old company called Carmel Kitchen Specialists (CKS). He chose the latter, and now 40 years later, he feels he chose wisely.

In the first ten years of business, the company grew slowly but surely. In the mid 1980’s, business began to boom. In 1986, CKS moved into their present location, 606 Station Drive, still in Carmel, just south of Carmel Drive, off AAA Way and across the parking lot from Merchants Plaza. View map.

Carmel Kitchen Specialists has grown into a company with an excellent staff of designers. and its installation crew members are true artisans of their trade. Jan Richman, who joined CKS in 1981 as an installer and now is the operations manager, works with the staff to ensure complete customer satisfaction.

“Simply put, we do it better. We work hard at it-not just in the design phase, but all the way through to the end of the installation of a project. It is our entire team that makes us strong,” said Jeff.

In events like The Decorators’ Show House, Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home, and Builder’s Association of Greater Indianapolis Home-A-Rama, Carmel Kitchen Specialists has won awards with every participation. But it’s the rewards of building the client relationship that outshine them all.

“Throughout these years, we have formed many friendships and relationships with our clients and vendors,” said Jeff. “We have created families and watched our clients create their own. We have built kitchens and when these families have grown even more, we helped with remodeling or planning a new home. Now we are designing for these families grown children and working with our original clients to downsize. We greatly appreciate the trust our clients and potential clients have shown in us over the years.”

Since CKS’ start in 1975, the company has created hundreds of living spaces for its customers that include kitchens, baths, wet bars, entertainment centers, libraries, study centers, laundry rooms—cabinetry literally for every room in the home. They have performed for clients in states as far west as Arizona, east to New York, south to Florida, and north to Michigan (even in Canada).
